McCain’s choice for V.P. was a smart move

On the heels of what some have called a historic Democratic National Convention, GOP presidential candidate John McCain made some history of his own. Just hours after Barack Obama officially accepted the nomination of his party in Denver, a chartered aircraft carrying Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had left Anchorage, bound for Dayton, Ohio. On Friday morning, after an entire morning of free media for the McCain campaign, McCain stood with his new choice in front of thousands to announce a head-turning decision.

Sarah Palin, 44, is described as the “hockey mom” governor in Alaska, which has propelled her to unimaginably high approval ratings in that state. She won that office by ousting the incumbent GOP governor who had been surrounded by controversy. This is just one example of her record which is peppered with examples of reform and independent thinking. Her resume may be thin, but at the end of the day, her experience is very comparable to another so-called “newcomer” to the political stage: Obama.

With five children — one of whom is about to be deployed to Iraq in the army — Palin is a shining example of hard working, middle class women who have a record outside of our broken Washington system. In McCain’s own words, she’s “just what we need.”

McCain’s surprise pick is no doubt a gamble, but it is one he must take. With the political climate favoring change, a Washington insider on the ticket would make Obama’s support swell. On the most important domestic issues, however, she will be a powerful asset. In Alaska, Palin had firsthand experience with the energy issues we hear about every day. As a supporter of environmentally responsible drilling, she will finally be able to tell the American people that we can recover more energy sources — and we will.

She will also have the opportunity to strike a note with families struggling from other, lesser publicized issues. Palin’s youngest child was born with Down syndrome, and it is already clear she will be an advocate for those with disabilities on several levels.

During the chaotic primary season, it was evident that if McCain did win the nomination, he would have to find a running mate that the conservative base could relate to. It appears we can check another box off his to-do list. Palin’s record on the local and state level has been one that the millions of conservative citizens can relate to, including controlling corruption and government spending, and action on social issues.

The McCain campaign is hoping Palin will pick up many of the disenfranchised Hillary Clinton supporters that fought hard for a woman to be on the ticket but didn’t succeed. Immediately after being announced, the new ticket headed to battleground states like Pennsylvania, where Clinton had a large set of female supporters. With the largest crowds yet, it appears momentum for the pair is already growing.

Palin’s strongest credential is that she relates to the common voter, and she hasn’t been adulterated by years elbowing with Washington insiders. The most ironic part about the choice is that Obama’s campaign has run on a platform of reform from outside of Washington. When their years in Washington are combined, however, Obama and Joe Biden have spent over a third of a century there.

Biden’s pick as Obama’s running mate was a mistake that will make inconsistencies in their campaign even more evident. Biden’s record in the Senate has been almost entirely party-line, with no effort to cross the aisle. McCain, meanwhile, has come under fire from his own party almost as much as Democrats for his willingness to compromise on important issues like campaign finance reform, the War in Iraq and immigration.

There is as much “maverick” in Palin as there is in McCain, which is why she completes a theme the campaign has been building for months. Her personal story is compelling. Her personality is competitive, straightforward and honest.

The United States needs an open and honest debate about Obama’s plans to raise taxes on those that provide jobs, cut vital funding to our troops at a time when they are succeeding and exchange personal responsibility for overreaching government bureaucrats.

Palin has faced these challenges already while running the largest state in the United States, and I think everyone will be surprised with her poise and savvy in exchanges with Biden.

Palin balances the GOP ticket, first and foremost. McCain has consistently said he would not choose a running mate that was identical to him, but one that would bring a new perspective and new supporters to the campaign; she does both.

McCain intends to gain

McCain intends to gain because "it is always harder to debate a woman who places her gender front and center". most of the argument form Hillary Clinton was on judgment in diplomacy, health care, NAFTA, etc. I honestly doubt Ms. Palin has enough knowledge, leave alone experience, to debate Joe Biden on the issues.

It is also clear that John McCain will set the agenda when it comes to policies and Ms. Palin will not have much to contribute in terms of perspective. Her experience will not have much value for John McCain.

John McCain the maverick should have chosen one of his breed, than to have to stoop to the extreme of his party base. He has squandered a big chance at choosing someone who will make his case and pad up his ticket.

"Environmentally responsible

"Environmentally responsible drilling."

ARE YOU SERIOUS? You Republicans have it so bass ackward so as to justify these ridiculous claims. NEWSFLASH: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE DRILLING.

Sara Palin is crock of ****. She abused her power to kick people out of office, and then rehired more of the same idiot-prone workers to do her bidding. She doesn't believe that global warming is caused by humans. She says that she opposes earmarked funds, yet happily accepted them in order to support the Bridge to Nowhere (which she now claims that she never supported). She is no 'maverick' by any sense of the word. She's a female McCain with no adequate experience to be the Vice President.

DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS JOKE OF A VP PICK. SHE CAN'T EVEN RAISE HER CHILDREN CORRECTLY. NOW SHE'S TRYING TO PASS OFF HER 17 YEAR OLDS PREGNANCY AS A GIFT - GIVE ME A BREAK.

McCain's VP Choice

Nicely written article Andy. You set forth a very well-reasoned analysis. Evidence of that comes from the person whose responsive comments I just read, who could only resort to idiotic, hate-filled name calling in reply. Chalk one up for you.

Palin = Obama [experience] ? I don't think so...

Her resume may be thin, but at the end of the day, her experience is very comparable to another so-called “newcomer” to the political stage: Obama.

---------------
"Only in Republican America would a black man with a law degree from Harvard, 12 years in politics, four years on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and manager of one of the most impressively flawless and forward thinking presidential campaigns ever not be ready for the presidency while a white female evangelical with 19 months in national politics and a bachelors in journalism is considered ‘ready on day one’." Palin a good choice? Yes, for the Democrats.

Setting the leftist collective straight

Bonzo must be from Illinois and have seen Obama in action on the streets of Chicago. Because Obama's experience as a two terms as a state senator and three years as US senator (sorry, make that one, bc he started officially running for president in 2006) do not make the man more qualified than Sarah Palin, who was a city council member and mayor for 10 years before she became governor of Alaska. The only experience Obama has over Palin is that he's been campaigning for president for three years more than she has. Yes, the man knows how to promote himself. But then again, so does Paris Hilton. (Ooh, I know you lefties hate that comparison).

In summation: Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in a race that was a basic slam dunk after the endorsed Republican opponent dropped out. As soon as he made that speech at the 2004 DNC (remember when Kerry lost? "I'm ready for service!"), he had vision of sugar plums and power dancing in his head. He starts penning memoirs and flying across the country seeking approval of his new fans in Hollywood. Not a whole lot time spent doing the work he promised to his constituents. If the man is elected (and he won't be), he won't even have finished one term as senator. What does that say about character and integrity. What does that say about experience? NOTHING!

Don't forget: Jesus Christ was a community organizer

and Pontius Pilate was a governor.

"I think the point you’re missing here is that it doesn’t matter whether one’s diploma is from Harvard or from Chico State–what matters is possessing the general character of a learner versus…well, a fundamentalist know-nothing who fires librarians because they won’t expurgate all the naughty words from The Catcher in the Rye. It’s the difference between Lincoln (self-educated) and Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel. Working one’s way up to Harvard Law from a modest background might be a sign that one falls more clearly into the former category, but it’s by no means the only reason we have to think that Obama is a smart and urbane man.

You know, I probably won’t even vote for Obama and here I am, having to explain this. I actually disagree with him on everything, but I wouldn’t say for a second that he and Palin are equally qualified and fit for the presidency. He’s merely wrong. She’s an embarrassment."

Do you plan to vote for

Do you plan to vote for Nader, or is there an actual Socialist Workers Party candidate on the Minnesota ballot this year? And interestingly enough you are comparing Jesus Christ to Obama. That seems to be on par with the fervor I've seen from most of Obama's political followers.

Also, your comparison of Palin's education to Obama's is definitely lacking in judgment. Palin was college educated, a journalism major in fact. I believe her working experience outside academia, in actual local and state government service (which is adds up to more than 10 years) is more than enough to get her into the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. (If Margeret Anderson Kelliher can get in...) So basically you have said that Obama has a law degree therefore he is in superior standing to that of a sitting state governor. That itself is a pretty weak argument. Do you know why? bc I've met a lot of idiot lawyers. The man doesn't even have a record of success in his own field of expertise.
Yes, he is obviously intelligent. But no, his experience at Harvard School of Law does not make him more experienced to be president than Sarah Palin.

This is fun. Exactly like the McCain camp had hoped for. Prove that Obama's experience doesnt even belong in the same category as that of McCain by keeping the hardcore Dems dwelling on Obama v. Palin. The undecideds can see that Obama is really truly not qualified to be president and they vote for a man with a real record and established integrity., JOHN MCCAIN.

Did you read the comment you are responding to?

Strange comments...

You think I am going to vote for Ralph Nader? And waste my vote?

Did you get the point about Palin's attempt to censor the librarian while she was mayor? You do know that they had to hire a city administrator to take care of that part of the job for her - in a town of 5,000?

But let's try again to try to get you to think about this. Here's something for you to contemplate. It is from Higher Ed and is by Margaret Soltan, an English prof at GW:

"Does Palin’s spotty, undistinguished college career matter? A communications major, she probably had little exposure to history, philosophy, languages (Obama doesn’t speak any language besides English, but UD assumes that as a political science major at Columbia University, specializing in international relations, he had at least to study one for a few years), and what we used to call civics. Communications, after all, is radically present-oriented: It’s about public relations, television, advertising, radio ...

Does it matter? Does it matter that unlike Obama — who seems to have had a transformative intellectual experience at Columbia — Palin completed an undistinguished vocational undergraduate degree?

No. In the scheme of things, if a politician has a lively, curious intellect anyway, and a lot of political experience, and good political judgment, a substandard college experience, while a pity, isn’t a campaign-ender.

We won’t know whether Palin possesses these qualities on a presidential level until she has her first serious press conference. Until then, it’s worth reminding ourselves why all over the world people cherish a good education. It’s not just about jobs. It’s about expanding your consciousness in a way that profoundly enhances the quality of your life."

My friend, as your candidate John McCain would say, this is not some sort of mud-slinging contest. I think she is totally unqualified and is an embarrassment. You disagree. Fine. In the end people will listen to you and me and the pundits and make up their own minds.

That's how democracy is supposed to work, I thought?

Your friend,

Mr. Bonzo
