The Minnesota men’s and women’s swim teams had strong weekend performances at the Minnesota Grand Prix this weekend. The Grand Prix, sponsored by USA Swimming, brought swimmers of all ages and levels of competition to the University Aquatic Center to compete this past weekend.

Jillian Tyler took the top overall time in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke Friday with a time of 1:01.17. Another big Gophers win Friday included an 800-yard freestyle relay top time.

Tyler also went on to win the 200-yard breaststroke in Saturday’s competition.

The men also had a competitive weekend. Drew Brown of the Gophers diving squad set school records in the 3-meter diving competition and platform competition Saturday. Brown scored 388.65 in the preliminary round of platform competition and won with a score of 335.70.

Senior distance freestyler Mike Holmes took home a big win in the 1650-yard freestyle, edging out second-place finisher Eegan Groome of First Colony Swim Team by less than two tenths of a second for the win.

The women also garnered three top-ten finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle Sunday.

Freshman swimmer Karl Burdis place fourth overall in the 200-yard backstroke. Burdis took sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, an event in which Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte took first with a nearly two second leg up on the second-place finisher.

Burdis was also a member of a first-place 400-yard medley relay Sunday.
