Gophers looking to defense to slow a "fast" Mankato squad

The Minnesota women’s hockey team looks to keep their consistency against Minnesota State alive.

The Gophers (9-2-1 overall, 8-1-1-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association ) take on Minnesota State (6-5-1, 3-4-1-1) at home this weekend. Games are scheduled for 7:07 p.m Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday .

Since the start of the series in 1998, Minnesota holds an all-time record of 37-3-2 against the Mavericks. The Gophers had back-to-back shutouts last year as they went 4-0 against the Mavericks.

Sophomore Terra Rasmussen said the Gophers will have to focus on their defensive zone because MSU is fast.

“They have good forwards and they’re very fast,” she said. “If we can keep them out of our zone and also, capitalize on our power play, we will do well. Last weekend we didn’t do that very often.”

Minnesota State enters this weekend after being swept by St. Cloud, losing by one goal in each game. The Gophers swept Bemidji State last weekend and look to bring that momentum into this series.

Last Saturday’s 7-0 win against Bemidji state was a great game for the Gophers, coach Brad Frost said.

“We came out strong and finished stronger,” he said. “We need to do that again this weekend.”
