In a rematch of last year’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five championship game, the top-ranked and unbeaten Minnesota men’s hockey team will travel to Denver this weekend for a two-game series with the No. 10 Pioneers.
Denver (6-4-1, 4-3-1 WCHA) had Minnesota’s number all last season — going 4-0-1 against the Gophers, including the Pioneers 2-1 win in WCHA Final Five finale.
And while sometimes players like to forget about previous seasons or at least keep those kinds of thoughts in the back of their minds, Minnesota senior defenseman R.J. Anderson said that isn’t the case this time.
“I wouldn’t say it’s in the back of our minds. We brought it up because I think we owe them a little revenge,” Anderson said. “We only scored five goals against them last year in five games.”
Anderson and the Gophers defensemen will have their hands full; dealing with sophomore forward Tyler Bozak.
Bozak led the Pioneers in scoring last year with 34 points — nine of which came against Minnesota.
The four-time WCHA Rookie of the Week tallied a pair of assists and seven goals, including a hat trick on Nov. 4, 2007, against Minnesota.
“I think based on last year he’d like to play 35 games against us. He might have had 50 goals,” Minnesota coach Don Lucia said . “He’s a really good player. Obviously, we have to be aware of him.”
The Friday faceoff is slated for 8:30 p.m., while Saturday’s finale is scheduled for 8 p.m. Both games are Central Standard Time.
